The mission of the EIB is to further the objectives of the European Union by making long-term finance available for sound investment.


The shareholders of the European Investment Bank are the 27 Member States of the European Union.


The EIB was created in 1958 under the Treaty of Rome as the EU's long-termlending institution. As a policy-driven bank, the EIB supports the EU's priority objectives, especially European integration and the development of economically weak regions.

The EIB finances a broad range of projects which contribute to EU economic policy objectives. Examples of projects include investment in SMEs to promote job creation, construction and upgrading of transport infrastructure, energy production, transferanddistribution, ventures fostering more efficient energy use and alternative energy supplies, telecommunications infrastructure, natural and urbanenvironment schemes, investment inhumancapital (schools, universities, laboratories, research centres, hospitals, etc.) as well as
industrial projects in manufacturing.

Since 2000 the EIB is part of the EIB Group. The EIB Group brought the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Investment Fund (EIF) under a singleumbrella.The Groupoffers its clients a one-stopshop for a wide range of financial products.

EIB and EIF staff are salaried employees but do not have the status of established officials. They must be nationals of one of the Member or Accession States and have a commandof at least two or three of the EU's official languages. They come from various professions: banking specialists, but also economists, lawyers, engineers, administrative staff, public information specialists, translators and many more besides.

The EIB' s training policy encourages skills development and lifelong learning for all members of staff. The EIB offers in-house training facilities and courses as well as external seminars. The annual performance appraisal exercise also covers the staff training and development needs.
