Product Owner - Model Validation Trading & Banking Book Risks - ING

Locatie: Amsterdam
Dienstverband: Full-time

Model Validation Trading & Banking Book Risks is looking for enthusiastic Product Owners with a background in modelling, validation and/or risk management. ING’s Model Validation Trading & Banking Book Risks tribe (MVTBBR) is an energetic, innovative and collaborative international team of currently about 35 highly qualified professionals of various quantitative backgrounds, located in Amsterdam. We are responsible for validating the Trading & Banking Book Risk models used by ING worldwide, in more than 40 countries. By bringing in our expertise, our aim is to independently assess whether a particular model is fit for the purpose it was designed for, based on the latest theories, empirical evidence, regulations, best practices & technological innovations. We play an important role in safeguarding a model’s quality. In fact, our mission is “to be the independent gatekeeper of the quality of ING’s models, thereby empowering ING to stay a step ahead with innovative modelling”. Our work has a real impact, driven by continuous improvements. We contribute to sound business practices, supporting healthy, sustainable ING and global financial stability.

Following ING’s Think Forward Strategy to become the next generation digital bank, as well as the Model Risk Management (r)evolution that is picking up worldwide, our team has been substantially growing (and will further grow) in size lately. This calls for an organizational redesign, whereby we’ll introduce newly defined Product Owner roles for our model validation squads (besides installing Chapter Leads and Senior/Principal Validation Leads).

What you'll do

As a Product Owner you’re the “spider in the web” for one or two model validation squads, both internally towards the team members and externally towards the stakeholders. You continuously align the demand for model validations and other work with the supply and availability of the model validators, resulting in planning. This planning needs to be aligned with the various stakeholders and will be part of a broader, end-to-end (or “integrated”) planning of model lifecycle activities. You are responsible for what a squad does, therewith driving the squad’s delivery.

This means that you:

  • own the squad’s backlog and continuously update it with new requests (e.g. periodic and pre-approval validations, recommendation follow-up assessments, CAS and ECB findings, policy work etc.)
  • prioritize the backlog by a.o. consulting & aligning with the squad’s broad range of stakeholders (e.g. other Product Owners), by defining road maps in “Quarterly Business Reviews” and by aligning in “Market Places” with senior management
  • manage the backlog on a continuous basis and therewith drive the planning
  • plan and support model validation projects from a project management perspective. E.g. you timely send the upcoming validation planning and first information requests to the stakeholders, you organise kick-off sessions, interim meetings, report discussion meetings & retros, and you ensure a proper archiving of each validation for auditability purposes. Moreover, you ensure timely delivery of the required information to the validators and are the escalation point for planning and alignment issues
  • deliver planning updates & project progress dashboards to the Tribe Lead on a regular basis
  • provide feedback on the performance to both the validators and Chapter Lead(s)
  • take the initiative to continuously improve the agile way of working, the collaboration within your squad and the interaction with stakeholders
  • frequently align with the Agile Coach, the Chapter Lead(s) and Senior/Principal Validation Lead
  • will work closely with the Chapter Lead(s). Together you ensure that the work is effectively allocated within the squad. Together with the Chapter Lead and/or Senior/Principal Validation Lead, you determine a project’s overall duration (which the validators subsequently refine into milestones)
  • will be part of the leadership team of the MVTBBR tribe, reporting directly to the Tribe Lead. Together with the other Chapter Leads, the Product Owners and the Senior/Principal Validation Leads, you contribute to the further design of the tribe’s vision & strategy and drive the execution.

How to succeed

  • You have an academic degree in e.g. financial economics or a quantitative field, with a background in and/or affinity with models
  • You have at least 3 to 5 years of related work experience in risk management and/or a modelling domain
  • You have experience in planning & organizing multiple projects simultaneously, using various reporting tools, e.g. dashboards, presentations, resource estimates
  • You are organized, accurate, detail-oriented and are able to translate strategic issues into concrete plans
  • You have excellent stakeholder management skills, you get energy from solving planning puzzles & issues, you are persuasive and feel comfortable to interact with senior management
  • You have experience with the agile way of working and have an interest in progressing with this
  • You have fluent communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing
  • You are prepared to travel occasionally. Your main base is Amsterdam.
